Questions not Covered Here?

If you have questions about your rights as a renter or are having problems with your landlord, then there are several terrific sources of reliable information available:
  • The Federation of Metro Tenant Associations (FMTA) is a renter advocacy organisation here in Toronto that has many experts who can answer your questions either by telephone (416-921-9494), postal-mail, or e-mail (hotline@torontotenants.org).

  • If you have questions about hearings at the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB), either because you or your landlord has scheduled a hearing or you are considering filing a complaint (“tenant application”) at the LTB, there are lawyers and community legal workers who can help. There is no cost for their service. These Tenant Duty Counsel advisors are available at most LTB offices, and are also available to speak with by telephone.

  • You can also speak with a layer at your local Community Legal Clinic (CLC) office. Your local CLC can provide you with legal advice or connect you with legal representation. Each CLC office services a specific area of the city; check their webpage for more information. It is usually best to visit during one of their “Drop In” times, if they have them. You can try telephoning, but these are busy offices, so it is usually faster to drop in than to call. You can find the CLC office that services your area by following this link.

TTC work

I will call the FMTA today too for advice, but I wondered if readers had thoughts.  The TTC is sinking an elevator shaft into the front lawn of our building.  They have engaged with tenants directly.  As tenants we are concerned about noise, access to the street, vibrations that could cause damage to our units and personal property etc.  We've had a virtual meeting with the TTC and are waiting for answers to our questions.

Work has not begun in earnest (start on our grounds is 2024), but we're going through road restrictions as TTC does utility investigation.  The TTC promised personnel to assist residents who drive and are now having trouble getting in and out of the parking lot, but the "personnel" have not materialized.  Should the landlord be handling this with the TTC or should the tenants be complaining to the TTC about this, or both?

Hi Charlotte,

Your situation does not sound like fun.

I would be very interested in hearing what the FMTA has to say about this, but as far as I can tell there isn't a requirement in the Residential Tenancies Act for the landlord to intervene here.  I think that you may have to deal directly with the TTC.

But that's just my guess, let us know what the experts at the FMTA say.
