Title: Ford votes down Rent Stabilization Act and with it housing affordability
Post by: samantha on December 09, 2021, 06:20:02 pm

The Rent Stabilization Act was proposed and put forward by several NDP members in the Ontario Legislature.  But Ford's conservative tenant-haters voted it down.

Here's a link to the vote itself:

and here a statement from MPP Jessica Bell (excerpt from the announcement on her mailing list):

Ford votes against housing affordability and my Rent Stabilization Act

Sixty percent of people living in University–Rosedale are renters and housing affordability is increasingly becoming their top concern.

Right now, 40 percent of renters pay unaffordable rents, and as a result are struggling to pay for food, child care, electricity, transportation or medication. With rental prices continuing to soar month after month and wages staying stagnant, we need to act now and stabilize the cost of renting our homes.

Building new homes will not make housing more affordable in the near-term for people who rent.  For every one new affordable home that is built, 15 affordable homes are lost.

Last week, the NDP forced a vote on my Rent Stabilization Act (https://www.facebook.com/BhutilaKarpoche/videos/435823014814269/), a bill that if passed would have made a significant step in making housing more affordable by ending the incentive for landlords to evict tenants and jack up the rent when a new tenant moves in. Doug Ford struck it down.

Thank you to everyone who joined our effort and helped raise awareness of our bill, whether through knocking on doors with me, calling neighbours or signing our petition to Premier Ford. We will not stop fighting.

Hi,

I really appreciate your pointing out this disgraceful (from a renter's perspective) continuance of vested interests and the on-going polarization of Canadian society. Read what Samantha is saying here, renter folks: the Ford government is not your friend.

The Writ for the 43rd Provincial Election drops on Wednesday, people. Ensure you vote. Ensure you vote with renters rights and the current dire situation we face in mind. I'm not going to promote or denigrate any party or candidate, but any thinking person can figure out what's traditionally and historically not been working out for us!
