General Discussion

This section is for general discussions on any topic (while still remembering to post questions regarding tenant problems in their appropriate "Common Tenant Problems" areas).

Questions not Covered Here?

If you have questions about your rights as a renter or are having problems with your landlord, then there are several terrific sources of reliable information available:
  • The Federation of Metro Tenant Associations (FMTA) is a renter advocacy organisation here in Toronto that has many experts who can answer your questions either by telephone (416-921-9494), postal-mail, or e-mail (

  • If you have questions about hearings at the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB), either because you or your landlord has scheduled a hearing or you are considering filing a complaint (“tenant application”) at the LTB, there are lawyers and community legal workers who can help. There is no cost for their service. These Tenant Duty Counsel advisors are available at most LTB offices (COVID permitting), and are also available to speak with by telephone.

  • You can also speak with a layer at your local Community Legal Clinic (CLC) office. Your local CLC can provide you with legal advice or connect you with legal representation. Each CLC office services a specific area of the city; check their webpage for more information. It is usually best to visit during one of their “Drop In” times, if they have them. You can try telephoning, but these are busy offices, so it is usually faster to drop in than to call. You can find the CLC office that services your area by following this link.

Number of homeless encampments in Toronto has doubled
« on: April 12, 2024, 09:35:13 am »

i am so sick of watching things get getting worse and worst everywhere, and the reason is always money!  How is it ok for us taxpeyers to pay $380 million for the upcoming soccer worldcup fiasco at the same time as the number of homeless people in parks has doubpled since a year ago?

The article says that the increase in homelessness was predictable.

Kozierok said the high cost of living along with inadequate social assistance is causing people to lose their home. She added that those who are struggling to make ends meet are finding themselves with no other option but to stay in an encampment as there aren’t shelter beds, a problem she said is exacerbated by the lack of a plan to support the influx of refugees in the GTA who are also seeking shelter.

“We’ve been predicting this for years,” Kozierok said.

And yet Doug Ford is willing to pay $650 million of taxpayer dollars to build a parking lot for his rich friend's new spa in Ontario Place!

Think of how many new affordable homes or homeless shelter spaces that money could fund.

Recent polls have the provincial Tories in the lead for a solid majority of seats in the Legislative Assembly. So that kind of translates into "more of same" for another 5 or 6 years. I liked the way Andrea Hazell hung on to Mitzie Hunter's old seat in Scarborough, to Doug Ford's ire.

On Sunday afternoon tenants in the York South-Weston area are holding a rally to march against unfair rent increases. Meet at 2:00 pm in front of the apartment building at 1440 Lawrence Avenue West.

Again that's Sunday April 14th at 2:00 p.m.
