On Sunday afternoon, tenants of 71, 75 and 79 Thorncliffe Park Drive held a rally, kicking off what they describe as a rent strike as they plan to withhold rent starting May 1.

The tenants contend that the building’s owners – Starlight Investments and PSP Investments – have been seeking rent increases of 4.2 per cent in 2022 and 5 per cent or more in 2023.

“We can’t afford the kind of rent increase they are asking for,” rally organizer Abdelaziz Dardake tells CityNews. “And we’re trying to send a message to the landlord that enough is enough.

Greedy Landlords!!!

As the news story says:

"Only 252 applications for AGIs were filed with the Landlord and Tenant Board in the 2011-2012 fiscal year in Ontario, but by 2019-2020 that number had ballooned to 758 applications, according to the board's annual reports. "

These Toronto rental buildings have had 5 or more AGIs:
• 33 King St.
• 5 Brookbanks Ave.
• 15 Brookbanks Ave.
• 1651 Victoria Park Ave.
• 400 Walmer Road

Tenants in North York building fighting 5% increase as Landlord and Tenant Board hearing approaches

"they first received notice of this rent increase in May of 2019, but due to a backlog at the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB), a hearing for the guideline increase is expected to happen on Nov. 21, more than three years later."

Looks like summer is here, and the landlords are becoming abusive about A/C units:

Hi Andy,

I saw your reply, and I am sceptical.  If both tenants signed a single lease document, then I think it may be more complicated depending upon whether the first year has passed or not.  The courts may treat them as a single "conjoined" unit.

Check-out this article:

   https://ontariolandlordandtenantlaw.blogspot.com/2013/04/my-roommate-abandoned-me.html

which states:

Quote
This changes when the fixed term expires and the lease continues on a month to month basis.  The law does not presume that co-tenants, after the expiry of a fixed term, intend to remain bound to each other for an indefinite period.  Therefore, in a month to month tenancy either or any of the co-tenants are permitted to give the requisite Notice of Termination of the Tenancy to the landlord to terminate the tenancy.   If the remaining tenants do not wish to remain in the property it is open to them to enter into a new landlord and tenant relationship with the landlord.

I tried searching on Steps to Justice, but didnt' find anything appropriate.

Platonopolis, I would strongly suggest that you speak with a lawyer.  You could also try calling the FMTA Tenant Hotline - it's terrific and they'll listen to your situation and provide good information for free over the phone:  416-921-9494.

I'm glad that this is being reported, if not in the mainstream media, then here at least.  (And I think it's terrific the way your colour-coded the members!)

Typical Ford though, isn't it?  The "Theatre" of social support, but stuffed with cronies who will out-number the two actual housing activists in the group to ensure that things stay the same, or more likely, get worse.  These are the sorts of people who caused the housing crisis with their policies and greed.

What a waste of time.
