General Discussion / Rally for Fair Rent! this Saturday
« on: July 13, 2023, 11:49:25 am »

I just received a notice abouy this from the FMTA

Rents are going up three to six times faster than wages are increasing.

Enough is Enough!

Join the York South-Weston Tenant Union on Saturday July 15 at 11:30am for a rally and march for fair rent and rent control! We will meet outside of 33 King Street (just north of Weston Rd and Lawrence Ave W), and then we will march to MPP Michael Ford's office and MP and Minister of Housing Ahmed Hussen's office.

The march will end with a community BBQ, live music and activities for the whole family.

Heres a link for more info   https://www.tenantunion.ca/march

CBC - Parkdale residents protest against landlord's application for 'above-guideline' rent increases

It is so great to see Akelius tenants banding together to fight this financial injustice, and protesting at Akelius's Toronto office!!

We support you – In solidarity!!

Harassment by Landlord / Re: Adjudicator bias
« on: March 24, 2023, 04:13:32 pm »
This is just so typical of the LTB.  The adjudicators are so often biased (I heard that many of them are landlords themselves).

Keep up the good fight!

In Solidarity!!

NOW Magazine is reporting on an Akelius building where the residents had no water for months and months during the pandemic, and it all turned-out to be that their plumber has accidentally shut a valve that they shouldn't have:

As lockdown hit, Akelius tenants say cold water shortage lasted 96 days

Other Tenant Problems / Re: New landlord demands
« on: October 17, 2022, 10:12:13 am »

Hi Markus,

I would be  very suspicious of that request.

Once you have signed your lease (which it sounds like you did years ago when you first moved in) your landlord cannot compel you to sign a new agreement, unless you are deliberately changing the details of your lease (like, if you are adding a new parking space, or storage locker, or something like that).  And in my experience, when a landlord wants new forms to be filled-out, then they are up to something.

I mean, in your case this all could be an innocent information-gathering activity.

But do you have to sign those forms?  Are the forms asking for sensitive information (like your place of employment, salary, banking info)?  Do the forms say anything about giving the landlord the right to run additional credit-checks?  I would be very leery of providing that information, since you already have the apartment.

Lastly, depending upon the exact wording on the forms, could those rental application forms be construed to constitute a new agreement with the landlord, thus allowing them to change the terms of your leases, or to set a new monthly rent?

Be careful!

This article in the Toronto Star makes me sooooo mad!!!!

https://www.thestar.com/amp/real-estate/2022/07/29/renters-facing-eviction-found-a-memo-from-their-new-landlord-saying-they-wanted-a-new-demographic-of-tenant-the-company-says-it-was-a-mistake.html

The tenants are being evicted, and they found a memo from their lanlord stating that their landlord wants a new "demographic" of tenant!!!  What the hell!!

MPP JEssica Bell's latest article in the Toronto Star is great.

Ford government’s latest housing bill won’t make housing affordable

This thought-provoking article poses an interesting question, why don't tenants demand letters of reference from their landlords?

https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/here-s-why-more-tenants-should-request-reference-letters-from-landlords-1.5850299

Quote
“A good landlord has every reason to tell you [about] the previous tenants,” he said. "Landlords might want to have letters that attest to their fitness as landlords, and a good landlord would voluntarily want to do that.”

I just posted this in the "General" section becasue the article is definitely of generl interest, but it's primarily about rental affordability, so I hope it's ok that I posted this link here too.

Why Canada is losing affordable rental housing faster than it's being built
