Common Tenant Problems - Renoviction

This section is for discussing Renoviction (eviction for the purpose of renovating the building that tenants are currently living in.)

In addition to this forum there are some terrific information resources available on this topic:

• The RenovictionsTO website has a lot of helpful information regarding renoviction, including a brief overview: "Renovictions: The Basics" to get you up to speed, a guide to Your Rights, and a Renoviction Tracker that we would strongly recommend any tenants facing renoviction to should sign up with.

• From the Federation of Metro Tenants' Associations: Demolitions, Conversions, Renovations and the Residential Tenancies Act.

• From Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO), Can my landlord make me move out for repairs or renovations?, and perhaps most importantly: Protect your right to move back in later!

Sorry that this one is behind a pay-wall, maybe an open copy will surface somewhere, but for those who can read the Globe and Mail online...

Eviction applications spike in Ontario as rents soar, vacancies dwindle

Quote
As Ontario faces a chronic shortage of housing and rapidly climbing rents, landlords in the province are increasingly trying to evict their tenants and take possession of those rental units.

In 2022, the Landlord and Tenant Board, which adjudicates rental-housing disputes in the province, received more than 5,550 eviction applications in which landlords sought units for themselves, family members or new buyers. That was an increase of 41 per cent from 2019, according to numbers provided by the province to The Globe and Mail.

I like the Globe but their blocking is a bit extreme. Kind of like Bloomberg's “Citylab” section. Vaguely related - the Scar is having trouble staying afloat too... see the cover story in the March issue of Toronto Strife. Haha, I made you laugh! 5 cents please.

Did you know that the N.Y. Times "Machine" is a subscriber-only thing. Worse there is no clear outline of the total, available document set... I've argued with them about the doubling in price, (eg., if you want a daily machine-readable version of the whole thing (eg. a daily WYSIWYG, PDF file) as recently as earlier this year (2023) and of course the customer service person only throws up their hands and as he/she/it spouts the official company line.

The “Times Machine” includes old microfilm, but they append a readable, text version of the item you select.

Even if you are a subscriber they hassle you if you are using a mobile device. They want you to run their app!!! I'm not making this up!
