In December 2020, Toronto City Council amended the Apartment Buildings Bylaw to make it mandatory for property owners and operators to inform all existing and prospective tenants of their RentSafeTO building evaluation score and details of the most recent evaluation conducted on the building. This email is a reminder that the amendment comes into effect on December 1, 2021. A notification has been sent to all property owners and operators and I am in the process of notifying tenant advocates and tenant association contacts.

How can the building evaluation results be shared?

The building evaluation results can be shared with tenants and prospective tenants in many different ways. Communications can be either a physical notice of the most recent evaluation score or through electronic means (such as by embedding the link to the new interactive RentSafeTO Building Evaluation Results – City of Toronto webpage into rental agreements or sharing the link with tenants via email). However, to ensure the information is accessible if a tenant does not have access to receive electronic communications, a physical form of notification must be used.

Please note, physical notices do not necessarily have to be provided to every tenant. Instead, a notice could be put in one or more common areas, such as elevators, lobby or laundry room, or on the Tenant Notification Board.
